On May 3, 2021, the governors of Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York jointly announced that they planned to lift most capacity restrictions on businesses on May 19 for cinemas in New York, they would not be limited in how many patrons may be present, but there must be 6 feet 1.8 m social distancing between groups.209210 On May 4, Los Angeles County was moved to yellow Minimal tier by state health officials,211 but the LACDPH did not allow cinemas to use the 75% option.212 Due to progress on vaccination, New York and California lifted capacity restrictions, including those on cinemas, in June 2021.213214 By August 2021, however, due to spread of Delta variant and waning vaccination rates nationwide, New York City where only 55% of residents were fully-vaccinated announced on August 3 that effective September 13, access to indoor entertainment venues including cinemas will be restricted to those who are vaccinated.215216 In October 2021, Los Angeles announced that starting November 4 residents will be required to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination to enter movie theaters.217
Early evolution : The earliest films were simply one static shot that showed an event or action with no editing or other cinematic techniques. Typical films showed employees leaving a factory gate, people walking in the street, the view from the front of a trolly as it traveled a city’s Main Street. According to legend, when a film showed a locomotive at high speed approaching the audience, the audience panicked and ran from the theater. Around the turn of the 20th century, films started stringing several scenes together to tell a story. The filmmakers who first put several shots or scenes discovered that, when one shot follows another, that act establishes a relationship between the content in the separate shots in the minds of the viewer. It this relationship that makes all film storytelling possible. In a simple example, if a person is shown looking out a window, whatever the next shot shows, it will be regarded as the view the person was seeing. Each scene was a single stationary shot with the action occurring before it. The scenes were later broken up into multiple shots photographed from different distances and angles. Other techniques such as camera movement were developed as effective ways to tell a story with film. Until sound film became commercially practical in the late 1920s, motion pictures were a purely visual art, but these innovative silent films had gained a hold on the public imagination. Rather than leave audiences with only the noise of the projector as an accompaniment, theater owners hired a pianist or organist or, in large urban theaters, a full orchestra to play music that fit the mood of the film at any given moment. By the early 1920s, most films came with a prepared list of sheet music to be used for this purpose, and complete film scores were composed for major productions.
Associated fields : Derivative academic fields of study may both interact with and develop independently of filmmaking, as in film theory and analysis. Fields of academic study have been created that are derivative or dependent on the existence of film, such as film criticism, film history, divisions of film propaganda in authoritarian governments, or psychological on subliminal effects e.g., of a flashing soda can during a screening. These fields may further create derivative fields, such as a movie review section in a newspaper or a television guide. Sub-industries can spin off from film, such as popcorn makers, and film-related toys e.g., Star Wars figures. Sub-industries of pre-existing industries may deal specifically with film, such as product placement and other advertising within films.
A films cast refers to a collection of the actors and actresses who appear, or star, in a film. A star is an actor or actress, often a popular one, and in many cases, a celebrity who plays a central character in a film. Occasionally the word can also be used to refer to the fame of other members of the crew, such as a director or other personality, such as Martin Scorsese. A crew is usually interpreted as the people involved in a films physical construction outside cast participation, and it could include directors, film editors, photographers, grips, gaffers, set decorators, prop masters, and costume designers. A person can both be part of a films cast and crew, such as Woody Allen, who directed and starred in Take the Money and Run. A film goer, movie goer, or film buff is a person who likes or often attends films and movies, and any of these, though more often the latter, could also see oneself as a student to films and movies or the filmic process. Intense interest in films, film theory, and film criticism, is known as cinephilia. A film enthusiast is known as a cinephile or cineaste.
Some films in recent decades have been recorded using analog video technology similar to that used in television production. Modern digital video cameras and digital projectors are gaining ground as well. These approaches are preferred by some film-makers, especially because footage shot with digital cinema can be evaluated and edited with non-linear editing systems NLE without waiting for the film stock to be processed. The migration was gradual, and as of 2005, most major motion pictures were still shot on film.needs update
Box office : In early March 2020, it was predicted that the global box office could lose US billion as a result of the pandemic. Countries that are pandemic hot-spots have closed or restricted cinemas and movie theaters, negatively affecting film revenue. Attendance has also been lower in other regions. Following the pandemic in mainland China, 70,000 cinemas were closed in January 2020. In the first two months of 2020, Chinas box office was down to US.9 million, compared to US.148 billion in the first two months of 2020.2 Later, as a result of the pandemic in Italy, on March 8, 2020, the Italian government ordered all cinemas to be closed, for up to a month. Before the closure, box office tracking estimated a 94% drop for the weekend of March 6–8 compared to the same period the previous year.8 Because of the growing pandemic in France, cinemas are operating at half capacity, leaving strategic seats unavailable to reduce proximity in the screens,9 a move followed days later by the Irish and Northern Irish cinema chain Omniplex Cinemas.10 On March 12, Qatar also closed all cinemas,11 as did the US on March 17, Malaysia and Thailand on March 18,12 the UK on March 20, Australia and New Zealand on March 22, and Singapore on March 27.13 After a state of emergency was declared in Tokyo and six other prefectures in Japan on April 7,14 over 220 cinemas were closed.151617
The Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards modified their eligibility criteria for their 2021 editions, as they usually require that a film be screened theatrically for a minimum length of time. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association mentioned that films released via non-theatrical means such as digital would be eligible if they were scheduled to have a bona fide theatrical release in Los Angeles after March 15 with a cutoff date to be determined.343536 The Best Foreign Language Film award would similarly offer eligibility for films originally scheduled for a theatrical release in their country of origin between March 15 and a date to be determined.37 The 93rd Academy Awards would also allow films released via password-protected or transactional video on demand to be eligible if they were originally scheduled to have a theatrical release. Once cinemas have sufficiently resumed operations, the requirement that a film be screened for at least a week would be reinstated. In addition to Los Angeles, eligible screenings would also be allowed to take place in one of five other major U.S. cities.3839
Other major films have postponed releases in certain countries. The Pixar film Onward, released on the opening March weekend, was not opened in the areas most affected by the coronavirus outbreak while cinemas were closed in China, it also chose not to open in South Korea, Italy or Japan.90 Other March 2020 releases A Quiet Place Part II and Mulan postponed their releases in affected areas, too. This prompted worry that, should March film openings underperform, blockbusters set for release in May specifically DisneyMarvels Black Widow and Universals F9 would move their dates later in the calendar.187 Mulan not opening in China, where it aimed to make most of its money, was particularly concerning,91 especially with the possibility that pirate copies will appear and prevent Chinese moviegoers from going to see it in cinemas when it is released.9 Comparatively, A Quiet Place Part II had not anticipated a large Chinese draw, as the box office for the first film in the country was only 10% of its total.7
